Rules for Electronic Presentation at Trial

If you intend to present documents electronically in court, most courts require an attorney or the trial presenter of electronic documents to meet with the court’s staff and/or IT department to test equipment.  This is usually performed at least 1 week before trial, but can be done days before with the Court’s permission.  It is not advised to wait until the last minute as recently a Judge was out on medical leave until returning the day of trial.

19th Judicial District Court, Parish of Baton Rouge, State of Louisiana: Some Judges require testing of equipment 2 weeks before trial.

Civil District Court, Parish of Orleans, State of Louisiana:  There is no charge for filing most pleadings, but there is a per page charge for each exhibit. This holds true for admitting exhibits into evidence during trial and can get costly for your client.  Additionally, there is a form online that must be completed for use of technology in the courtroom.  It is a requirement for all equipment and users to test and be familiar with usage during trial.

Use of electronic equipment in court:
It is important that you have a technician who is familiar with the courtroom and electronic presentations for the presenting to go smoothly and maintain the interest of the jury and judge.
